New Forest Extension by Carpenter Oak

When Jo and Mike Dowland began planning an extension to their converted barn in the New Forest, they already had a clear vision: a light-filled, impressive space that would provide a generous new living and dining area while sitting naturally alongside the existing building.

Having secured planning permission, the couple contacted Carpenter Oak in January 2021 to develop the structural oak frame. The project required close coordination between the architect and Carpenter Oak’s frame design team, particularly because the new extension needed to connect precisely with the existing barn.

Designing around the existing building

One of the key technical challenges was getting the height of the new extension exactly right. The oak frame needed to be designed and installed 25mm lower than the existing barn, with packing added to create a seamless connection while maintaining the required insulation performance. This detailed coordination ensured that the new structure worked both visually and technically with the existing building.

A vaulted interior with oak at its heart

Inside, the oak frame is deliberately celebrated as part of the architecture. A central truss forms a focal point, incorporating a distinctive curved sling brace and non-structural knee braces were introduced to create a gentle sweep through the frame.

At one and a half storeys from ground level to the top of the eaves, the space achieves the vaulted effect the clients wanted. Oak common rafters were also installed, giving the ceiling a warm, natural timber finish.

Making the most of natural light

Large areas of glazing were central to the design. The full-height glazed gable floods the room with natural light and creates a strong visual connection with the garden.

The scale of the glazing also presented a structural challenge. The oak studs forming the gable needed to be larger and longer than usual to support the substantial panes of glass. Specialist glazing was carried out by Topworks, allowing the timber structure and glazing to work together as one carefully considered element.

A contemporary extension rooted in its setting

Externally, the extension was designed to complement the existing barn and its New Forest surroundings. Black cladding and a slate roof give the building a simple, understated appearance that sits comfortably within the local vernacular.

Inside, the exposed oak frame, extensive glazing and natural materials create a bright and welcoming space for everyday living and entertaining. Thoughtful landscaping completes the project, helping the extension to feel connected to the surrounding garden.

A bespoke approach to oak framed extensions

The New Forest Extension demonstrates how structural oak framing can be adapted to the requirements of an existing building, combining traditional timber craftsmanship with careful technical design.

For homeowners considering an oak framed extension, the project also highlights the value of involving the timber frame specialist early in the design process. Close coordination between the architect, frame designer, structural engineer and other specialists can help resolve technical details and interfaces before construction begins.
