timber houses

A paper has been published summing up the debate in last year’s Towards carbon free construction: Cultivating and manufacturing our homes event, which makes a valuable contribution to the debate around timber and Modern Methods of Construction.

The UK has made a commitment to being zero-carbon and zero-waste by 2050, and the paper deals with the subject of engineered timber, which is the only large-scale construction material that can be grown.

Towards Carbon Free paper

Towards carbon free construction: Cultivating and manufacturing our homes is available as a PDF, and debates the issues around timber, MMC and issues around fire and insurance for different housing typologies. It sets out the argument that timber can make a valuable contribution towards meeting our carbon feel goal, working across the environment, engineering, architecture and construction.

Contributors to the paper include Michael Ramage, Andrew Waugh, Samantha Wait and Maria Smith, and the paper summarises the main points raised during the discussion and raised by the audience.

The event and paper was curated by the Centre for Natural Material Innovation at the University of Cambridge, the London Sustainable Development Commission and was part of London Climate Action Week.
