Teignbridge District Council’s custom and self build scheme near Newton Abbot has got the go ahead from Teignbridge Executive, with tenders due by 28 January.
The tender to identify a development partner for the scheme, which is on Council-owned land, got the green light following a soft launch undertaken late last year for the custom and self build site of up to 20 homes.
Following a successful call from NaCSBA for interested companies, several developers expressed interest in delivering the scheme.
The consented site is within a new neighbourhood planned next to land identified for the Houghton Valley Park to the north west of Newton Abbot, and is a an appealing site with views of the Teign Estuary..
With infrastructure in place, the selected developer could work with a housebuilder to deliver the homes. This could be either by creating customised homes based on a pre-approved series of designs or by enabling self builders to purchase plots to commission their home independently.
Final call for tenders
There is still time for interested developers to invest and undertake the work on this innovative scheme by registering their expression of interest with the Council by noon on 28 January. This would be followed by the full tender submission by 19 February.
Executive Member for Planning, Cllr Gary Taylor said: “We are pleased that despite delays to this project last year as a result of the impact of Covid-19 we are now able to offer a more flexible scheme and that our market testing work has revealed positive interest. I encourage further developers to register their interest in accessing the tender pack.
“This custom build site is an important element in the mix of new housing provision in and around Newton Abbot and will see the development of a quality-led residential scheme of 10 to 20 homes of which at least 20% will be affordable homes for local people”.
