At NaCSBA’s 2016 AGM in June it was announced that two new positions had been created on the Executive Committee, and that the Finance Representative and Self Build Representative roles were up for re-election.
After a period of consultation and elections the roles have been filled by industry experts who will help NaCSBA achieve its key objectives:
- To raise the awareness of the self build and custom build sector
- To double the self build and custom build sector’s contribution, to new homes built annually – from 8% to 16% by 2020, through lobbying government, land owners and finance providers
- To collate and communicate best practice to the self build and custom build sector
Peter Johns has been elected as the new Self Build Representative: Peter is the Publisher of SelfBuild & Design magazine. He launched the title in 1997 and is a fervent advocate of self build. The SelfBuild & Design brand now extends to two major exhibitions, an online plot finding service and a large digital presence. Peter believes passionately in self build in its widest sense, and believes it’s an important tool in giving people the choice to remove the constraints of the mass market developers. Peter aims to help NaCSBA deliver on raising the profile of self build and to embed it as part of the mainstream that almost everyone can embrace. Peter says: “We must ensure that self building is an opportunity for all, and not just for a select few.”
Raymond Connor has been elected as the new Finance Representative: Raymond launched the Self Build Advisory Service in 1997 to provide legal services, mortgage advice and plot finding services (BuildStore Mortgage Services and Plot Search). In 2001 the company became known as BuildStore and has grown to become a leading player in the self build sector. More recently Raymond has worked with councils across the UK to develop strategies for financing larger scale developments, as well as being involved with all the major custom build projects currently being undertaken. Raymond says: “The next 2-3 years are critical to the success of the market. From a lending point of view, we need to ensure that that there is not only sufficient lending to sustain expected growth, but also that lending comes in the form of relevant products and in particular lower deposit mortgages. My knowledge and understanding of how specialist finance works means that I can work with NaCSBA to ensure we can together lay solid foundations for a growing industry.”
Mike Hardwick has been elected to the newly created role of Consumer Representative following his term as Self Build Representative and interim CEO: Mike has been involved with the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon since it first opened. Mike writes every month for Build It magazine and is frequently called on as an expert at self build shows and for TV and radio. Mike believes these are revolutionary times for the self build industry and believes that a massive shift in the perception of self build and who it is aimed at is imminent. He also believes that the needs of the traditional self builder must not be lost amid the new and exciting world of custom building that has caught the imagination of the government.
Angela Doran is in the new role of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Representative: Since completing her first self build in 2002, Angela became a committed advocate of self provided housing models. She wholeheartedly believes that custom and self build should be options available to all, regardless of wealth or social status. Currently, Angela is leading Glasgow City Council’s pioneering self build project in Maryhill, while continuing to provide help and support to various groups across Scotland through her work as a director of Assemble Collective Self Build. Angela says: “I believe that, with the correct approach, Local and National Government can be persuaded to make legislative changes and address the barriers to self build in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great work has taken place, both in England and abroad to encourage self procured housing models. The result has been a surge in high quality, exciting housing developments which genuinely meet the needs of their residents and help to create resilient communities. We need these approaches across the rest of the UK.”
