Rare Space and Archiboo are hosting a conference in London for architects and would-be developers to help build their skills and tap into the small sites market.
The second event of it’s type, How to develop small sites examines the potential that small sites have for anyone wanting to develop, especially in a market where such sites are not viable for larger building firms to take on.
It will examine the holistic mix of needed to undertake a development and what other factors should be understood, such as winning the trust of local communities to make projects viable.
The day is especially targeted at architects, who’s work leads them to opportunities for bringing on small sites, and focuses on the ideas needed to take these sites forward.
The five topic areas will help independent developers navigate economic market shifts and a changing property market, capitalising on new opportunities.
How to develop small sites
Session 1: Where are these small sites?
Amin Taha, Groupwork + Amin Taha, John Smart, Craftworks, Steven Chance, Chance de Silva
How do you spot the potential of awkward, compact sites? What are the steps to finding a site and getting a solid overview of what’s needed?
Session 2: Funding the development
Neil Murphy, director of TOWN, Mary Riley, Custom Build Funding, Richard Brattle, Robinsons
Do you develop in a partnership or joint venture with others, or should you approach it independently? Discover some of the funding options, cost control and legal entities to minimise risk.
Session 3: Why be a developer?
Speakers are Olivia Reynolds, Pat Hayes, Be First, Marion Waller, City of Paris
Development comes with risks and this session is about what motivates you to develop, with speakers sharing lessons they’ve learned along the way.
Session 4: Alternative routes to development
Maria Brenton, OWCH, Tony Wood, Start, Hari Phillips, Bell Phillips*
For community groups and not-for-profit organisations, small sites are a way of delivering 100% affordable housing. But as this sector opens up, we need a more holistic understanding of what’s involved, including an understanding of new financing models.
Session 5: Learning from doing
Sam Jacob, Sam Jacob Studio, Tanya Kalinina, MBBK Developments, Eric Reynolds, Urban Space Management
In this final session, we hear from three speakers who have all undertaken development from a single building to an entire live/work community, and what they have learned along the way
