Government has announced a new planning appeals service aimed to make appeals “easier, faster and more cost effective”, a welcome ambition. This is part of its wider ambition to digitise the planning system, with the new submission form being a first step.

The new service follows a pilot scheme earlier in the year, although the system is still in development. As such, there is a list of 69 areas and a range of appeal types that are using the new system. The expectation is that as the process is improved it will be rolled out nationally.

As part of the system the plans include a new form for the submission of full planning and householder appeals in those English local authority areas where the system is operational.

While the pilot scheme was only for householder appeals, this new Beta system is relevant for larger planning appeals.

Users can make their appeals on the GOV.UK site instead of the Appeals Casework Portal, and the submission forms will also include guidance to help ensure appeals are submitted fully.
