Four new dates have been announced for The Right to Build Expo: Unlocking the potential of Custom and Self Build. Announced at the recent Custom and Self Build Expo, held on 20 June in Glasgow, the upcoming Expos are:

Fareham, Hampshire: 6 Sept 2018

Cambridgeshire: 4 Oct 2018

Warrington, Cheshire: 1 Nov 2018

Leeds, Yorkshire: 29 Nov 2018

Presented by the National Custom & Self-Build Association (NaCSBA), the Right to Build Task Force and Wood for Good, in partnership, the Right to Build Expos are a key tool to help engineer sector growth, sharing the national and local picture for Custom and Self Build in the UK.
A core element that’s become a major component of recent expos is presenters sharing the latest community-led housing projects, such as cohousing and community land trust projects.

Sharing the successes and challenges of projects and local authority experiences offers the chance to shortcut local practice. This enables councils and a range of stakeholders working to diversify housing supply to benefit from the learnings of those ahead of them in terms of planning and development.

So far, Expos have taken place in Aylesbury, Northamptonshire, Exeter, London and Glasgow, with a pattern emerging of the location typically being linked to an area where the Task Force has been active in its advisory context.
The London Expo in particular examined issues of community-engagement in an urban context.

Key to this is the role community-led housing has in empowering local people and reconnecting them with planning and the opportunity to have a input into design choices around their home.

Meanwhile, the Custom and Self Build Expo, Glasgow, looked at the Scottish picture for alternative housing supply, the first Expo to focus on one of the UK’s countries that doesn’t have the Right to Build legislation.

Across the UK, NaCSBA sees Custom and Self Build as a key ingredient to creating additional homes in the wider market, creating better quality and better built homes, that reflect their owners’ needs. And the Right to Build Expos are a natural way to share the successes and challenges of bringing the sector to scale, and to improve affordability as part of this.

All the presentations from all the Right to Build Expos are on the Right to Build Tookit’s Expo page.

Don’t forget to ensure you’re sharing the Right to Build Portal’s website, and ensure your customers and contacts are signing up to the Right to Build registers – which are crucial for sector growth as they evidence demand.
